Joe "Jumpin'
Joe" Harrison
Home:
Syracuse, NY
Joe Harrison is a
former NASCAR driver from Syracuse, NY. He competed in one NASCAR event
in his career in a #67 1949 Ford owned by himself.
The 1950 Daytona Beach Race was race number one for
the new NASCAR Grand National Division. Starting 31st in the forty-one
car field, Harrison would complete only three laps and struggle to a
40th place finish in a race that saw only ten of the original starters
finish on the rough beach course. Harrison was racing with the likes of
the Flock brothers, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Cotton Owens, Buck
Back, Lee Petty and many other future Hall of Famers.
Later, it is reported that
"Jumping" Joe Harrison ran out of Orlando, Florida. He ran a lot
at Sunbrock Speedway in the early '50's as well as other Florida
tracks with at least one event at a 1/4 mile track somewhere
near the Daytona International Speedway (Deland?). He
followed race circuits up and down the east coast in the late
'40's and early to mid '50's, which primarily included modified
racing.
Car numbers would have been
typically #8, #87, #88, and #313.
